Mountain Laurel
New school year
Mountain Laurel Montessori Farm School kicked off its first week on Sept. 4 with a traditional hike on Old Rag. Regular classes started Sept. 10. The school ties academics to farm work and the history and heritage of the Piedmont region.
This year the students and staff decided to start their farm with a tiered vegetable garden, berry patch, chickens for eggs and a few pigs. Also, the school is also offering a new elective called “Gaines Theory,” which teaches logic and math reasoning skills using fantasy football.
Mountain Laurel’s Farm School for grades 7 through 10 started in the fall of 2004 in leased space at Belle Meade Farm. This summer, Mountain Laurel’s Farm School moved to its own property in Flint Hill, closer to Mountain Laurel’s second campus in Front Royal. The Front Royal campus houses a toddler community, primary classrooms for 3 to 6 year-olds, and elementary classes for 6 to 12 year-olds.
