Despite losing the election, Welch said he thinks the ideas he put forward during his campaign have had a positive effect on the Rappahannock sheriff”s office.
“Several of my ideas that I originally had said in my announcement speech are being done now,” he said.
Now that the campaign is over, Welch said he is eager to get back to work.
Tm employed with the Culpeper Police Department and I plan on working there and working my way up the ranks,” he said.
But he did not rule out the possibility of making another run for Rappahannock sheriff in the future.
“It was my lifelong dream to be sheriff of Rappahannock, so I really can’t count anything out,” he said.
Williams was unavailable for comment Wednesday.
Smith’s victory is a historic first for Rappahannock. She was the sheriffs office’s first woman road deputy and now she can claim the distinction of being the county’s first woman sheriff.
“I know it’s going to be tough for some people to accept a woman sheriff", but hopefully they can get over that,” she said. “It shouldn’t matter. I solve the cases to the best of my ability and that helped me in the end.”
She also pointed to her involvement in other aspects of the Rappahannock community, such as coaching and working at the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department, as paying dividends on Tuesday.
“I think being involved in the community, being at the school and the fire department helped me,” she said. “I think parents thought that relationship I have with their kids is what they want. ... Just being myself
