Among the owners were Mrs. Dodge Sloane, Paul Mellon and his brother R.K. Mellon, Mrs. A.C. Randolph, Mr. F. H. Bonteceau, Mr. Ben Cohen, Mrs. Parker Poe, Ambassador Raymond Guest, Mrs. E.H. Augustus, Mr. Thomas Bancroft, and Mr. Nelson B. Hunt.
Trainers included Preston Burch, Sidney Watters, Charles Whittingham, and Mr. J. T. Skinner. Mrs. D.N. Lee also had several of her horses presented, and Millers said none were better turned out.
Miller . recalls leading Elkridge out for his royal inspection. He says he did wear a jacket for the occasion and remembers that the morning dawned about 29 degrees, turning into one of those perfect Virginia fall days like ones we got here last week.
He still has a somewhat blurry photo taken from a distance of the Queen with former Secretary of the Treasury George Humphrey. President Eisenhower decided not to attend but made his bulletproof Lincoln limousine available to the Queen.
Miller says security was everywhere and didn’t want cameras or other equipment anywhere near.
One is struck in the image how very young and beautiful the Queen is, and how happy she looks, perhaps as this state visit mirrored so closely her own interests, and since Paul Mellon’s contribution to racing in England was so noteworthy.
Of course, Prince Phi lhp and, later, Lady Di eventually visited here, as well as a very informal visit in 1988 by H.R.H. the Prince Royal, Princess Anne. After riding in and winning an invitational steeplechase in Nashville (organized by this author and ridden in by Times Democrat Horse and Field Sports editor Betsy P&rker), Princess Anne was transported to Mellon’s private jet strip for a very special weekend in Virginia hunt country. After attending the International Gold Cup, she was treated to a private day hunting with the Piedmont hounds and a view of Mellon’s art collection.
