chili cook-off The 4-H chili cook-off spiced upvthe Rappahannock high school cafeteria on Sunday afternoon. Six chefs squared off, bringing vats of homemade chili made from recipes such as “Strong Men Don’t Cry Chili” and “Spicy Dicey Chickie Chili.” Chili lovers were given free samples of each of the chilis ‘with admission and bought bowls for $1, putting the money . into glass jars at each of the cooks’ booths. Kevin Day’s “Kevin’s Family Chili” pulled in the most bills, 'trhich won him the event. Day said he has been refining the recipe — which calls for sausage, beef, fresh tomato sauce and Nigerian chili powder — for seven years. “It gets better every time I make it,” he said. The Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band and Debbie Zinn wnd Natural Grass played old-time bluegrass songs for the crowd. The cook-off raised funds for the Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Club. — Matt Felkey
