“And we all know what’s lurking in the nflrng( mming up before the planning commission in January. It’s already been there,” he said, referring to Bill Fletcher's application for an events center with accommodations at the 800-acre Miller Farm across FT Valley Road from Montpelier.

Fletcher’s special-exception permit was recommended for approval at the County Planning Commission’s meeting on Oct. 17, but a deficiency in the application’s advertisements forced Fletcher to withdraw his proposal. He has said be win reapply at the commissions meeting Jan. 16.

Fletcher was at the supervisors’ meeting Monday but did not comment on the Soruton^ application.

“The market is going to decide how many {conference centers] are successful,” McCarthy said. He added that tike county's zoning code was written in 1966 to allow a range of «wes in agricultural zones that are commercial in nature. What that prevents is the need for the county to zone large commercial arcus, which give rise to suburban-style strips of commercial development.
