Mark D. Obenshain rolled to re-election Tuesday, landing more than 70 percent of the vote to earn a second term as the 26th District’s representative in the Virginia Senate.
The Republican from Harrisonburg beat Democratic challenger Maxine Hope Roles, a political newcomer from Luray.
In 2003, Obenshain won 68 percent of the vote and was elected to his first term in the Senate. On Tuesday, he won 61 of 64 precincts in the district.
Obenshain won 100 percent of the 204 votes cast at the Forestville precinct in Shenandoah County.
Sperryville and the Town of Washington both favored Roles. She beat Obenshain 310 votes to 240 (56 percent) in Sperryville and 292 votes to 291 (50 percent) in Washington. She also won the Toms Brook precinct in Shenandoah County.
Chester Gap favored Obenshain more heavily than any other Rappahannock precinct. The incumbent won nearly 65 percent of the vote there, beating Roles 165
