The Town of Washington on Oct. 24 gained membership to the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission, an association of counties and towns in the region that assists with grant writing, tourism promotion and land-use planning
The 19-member commission voted at its meeting on Oct. 24 to grant admission to Washington, which had petitioned for membership.
Jeffrey Walker; executive director for the commission, said the vote was unanimous.
“It was a good discussion, and very enthusiastic,” he said. “We are excited about having them come on board.”
The decision was communicated to the town council following the meeting, Walker said.
The council now must designate a member to serve on the commission. Council members will discuss potential nominees for the position at their meeting on Nov. 14, and could send a representative to the commission’s meeting in mid-December.

Mitchell helped spearhead Washington’s move toward membership with the commission. She hopes to use the commissions resources to improve promotion ofWashington’s tourist attractions.
Membership with the commission would also allow Washington officials to network with other counties and towns. Mitchell hopes to solicit advice from locales with established tourism programs.
“The people from Orange and Madison... were so progressive in what they did,” she said. She added, “[w]e’re in baby steps now trying to catch up.”
