The votes are in and Rappahannock County has a
new sheriff - Lt. Connie Compton Smith.
Celebrating last evening at the Castleton Community Fire Hall, Connie was jubilant at her victory.
She should be.
It wasn’t until the end of her campaign that Smith was able to actually take some “time off” to work at promoting herself “Fve got work to do, I don’t have that kind of time,” Smith commented at one point.
Smith’s homegrown, folksy and often humorous approach to her bid for sheriff won over many hearts and minds among Rappahannock voters.
Smith never pulled any punches though about what she has to offer and what she will bring to the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office. She’ll bring all those things that we think of in a sheriff - leadership, ^responsibility training, common sense and guts. * But; as the first woman sheriff in Rappahannock County Connie is going to have to prove more than her predecessors. The ceiling for her will be higher as she is breaking new ground in a previously male dominated position.
Once she passes her honeymoon period, her decisions about personnel, budget and handling the bad guys will be carefully scrutinized.
While overwhelmed at the level of community support she received, Connie is even more committed to living up to that vote of confidence.
The sense at the Rappahannock News is that Connie is going to do just fine in her new role.
Congratulations!
