The Class 1 misdemeanor occurred around 10:30 p.m. on July 14. The bear was in a cherry tree in Chester Gap when it was shot in the head with a 14gauge shotgun.
Rappahannock County Game Warden Jason Culbertson testified that Longmire said he shot the bear because it was coming down the tree to attack. But Culbertson found blood much higher in the tree, which suggests the bear was not moving downward.
After one witness to the incident refused to answer attorney Doug Baumgardner’s question about who shot the bear, it seemed that Longmire might have been taking the blame for someone else.
