Rappahannock County will observe Arbor Day next Thursday, April 6. Miss Ruby Jenkins has been busy, working behind the scenes as usual, to insure it’s success. On this day at 10:00 a.m. in memory of Mr. Robert L. (Jock) Brown, a pink dogwood tree will be planted on the Court House Lawn. A short service will be led by Mr. James W. Fletcher. The poem, “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer, will be read by Mrs. Eva Smith.
One .hundred and twentyfive people have ordered 420 dogwood trees and 200 Chinese Chestnut seedlings. These trees may be picked up at the Extension Office in Washington, Virginia on Thursday, April 6th-8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Planting steps:
1. Select site and dig holes prior to picking up trees.
2. Trees are bare-root nursery stock. Keep roots moist and wrapped until planting. Do n6t let roots dry out.
3. Plant as soon as possible. 4. Make hole deeper and wider than root system. Refill with top soil so that the plant will set about the same level as when growing in the nursery. Firm soil and make a ridge to hold the water then water thoroughly.
