Logan, a coach at the high school, asked if the School Board had included an increase in the extra curricular activity pay scale in the proposed budget.
Bloomer answered that extra curricular pay hadn’t been increased, adding that, instead, the salary scale had been raised $500 to make Rappahannock teachers’ pay competitive with other counties.
"I don’t understand how you feel that being on the bottom is competitive,” countered seventh grade teacher Lynn Baines. “You’re also telling teachers who’ve been here for a length of time that their loyalty is not worth much,’’ she added.
Seventh grade history teacher Susan Henry asked why the extra-curricular pay scale hadn’t been increased.
Mrs. Massie answered that, considering the amount of money the School Board members had to work with, they felt a 6.8 per cent increase across the Board was the most equitable allocation of funds.
Jennings Hobson noted the School Board was paying teachers less for the same amount of work, in terms of spending power due to inflation. “You’ve given them a 4.3 per cent cost of living increase when the cost of living has gone up by almost seven per cent.”
