“In our minds, it’s 6.8 per cent,” answered Chairman Beverly Massie.
"You can break it down but the total increase is 6.8 per cent,” agreed Bloomer. Teachers as a group are the only employees of the school system with an experience scale, he noted. “In order to be fair and equitable, we figured the overall total increase and applied that percentage to all employees,” Bloomer said.
Experience Penalized
“I’d like to plead the case for experienced teachers,” said Mrs. Lucio Kilby. “Our projected increase is never as much as the beginning teachers,” she maintained. “I kind of resent the fact that beginning teachers are given a larger percentage increase.”
Sharon Kilpatrick noted that the S500 increase in each step of the salary scale gave beginning teachers at the bottom of the scale a much larger percentage increase than experienced teachers at the top of the scale.
By including the regular scale increase as a cost of living raise, “you’re telling us that the experience increment scale you showed us when we were hired doesn’t mean anything." argued Bomberger.
