full sunlight, such as yellow poplar and pines. Presently, such shade-tolerant trees as oaks and maples are gradually assuming the “dominant” role in the forests. This is the usual course of events following any catastrophe such as fire or flood, but—as was mentioned earlier—the chestnut could not recover its dominion.
And so, while our forests were not destroyed by the blight, they did experience a radical, upheaving change, along with the lives of the people of Appalachia, Could this upheaval have been foreseen and prevented ? Probably not.
And yet it was not without precedent. The starling and the house sparrow are two examples of alien organisms that have disrupted the American ecology. (They were both brought over from Europe.) Here in Rappahannock, the honeysuckle vine and the tree-of-heaven are persistent, prolific, troublesome weeds. These plants were deliberately (and capriciously) imported from Asia, as was the Chinese chestnut.
