We are fortunate in Rapphannock to have those who believe in conserving time, energy and money. One such resident is Mrs. Anne Keyser, Washington, Virginia, who over the years has collected a book full of household tips. Mrs. Keyser was kind enough to share them with me, some of which follow:
When arranging flowers in a vase cut up an old sponge and cram the pieces around the neck of the vase to hold the flowers in place.
Glue small magnets to unused wall space in medicine cabinet to hold nail file, tweezers, etc.
To remove ink stains from hands, wet the tip of the head of a match and apply it to the stain.
Spray with oil of sarsafras if you are trying to get rid of red ants.
Wash window screens with nylon net to get them clean without streaks.
Hot vinegar will remove paint from windows.
Moisten stove polish with vinegar instead of water. It will produce a maximum amount of polish with a minimum amount of work.
Put a strong rubber band lengthwise around your open paint can so the band will made a “bridge” across the top. Use the band to wipe excess paint off the brush as you work. Sides and top of can will stay clean.
