Hazardous Waste Threat
Rural Virginia, a statewide public interest organization, will host an educational meeting on hazardous wastes in Orange on Saturday, August 28th. The meeting is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Prospect Heights Middle School in Orange and is open to the public.
Billed as "The Threat of Hazardous Wastes: An Opportunity for Rural Citizen Action”, the meeting will feature oral histories of the situations in Buckingham, Orange, Culpeper and Pittsylvania by residents from each of these counties. Lois Gibbs, former Love Canal resident now with the Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste based in Arlington, has been invited (but not confirmed) as a guest speaker.
Four skills workshops and a film will complete the agenda. The workshop choices will cover access to information, political action, transportation of nuclear and hazardous wastes, and storage of low level waste in Virginia. A 30 minute film entitled "In Our Backyards, Uranium Mining in the U.S.” will be shown. Rural Virginia members organizing the public meeting hope that the forum will stir moral rural residents into responding to the multi-faceted threats facing Virginia.
