dropped down to the left of the snake and cautiously proceeded southward, always watching for a second rattler.
Then I saw it. It was monstrous, stretched out on my chosen pathway, about 10 feet in front of me, motionless and silent.
"My God!” I said aloud. “My CJod!” I repeated several times. It was long and fat, and quintessential^ evil. I could see the slits that were its pupils, its face puffed with venom, its body swollen with mammalian prey. It was easy to read malice into its every aspect and motion.
Yet 1 was sure that its motion towards me was not malicious. Tongue flickering, it started to crawl obliquely towards me. I backed away a few steps, which put me uncomfortably close to the first rattler, which was still buzzing; in fact, its buzzing seemed louder.
Then I saw the object of the second snake’s movements; Poking above the blueberry bushes, just a little to my right, was the vibrating rattle of a third snake! 1 could only see its tail, sticking up through the foliage.
I was in disbelief. It seemed I was surrounded by serpents. Again I backed off, so I could keep an eye on the first snake, and get a better look at the third. Number three was a little smaller than number one, a little yellow coil of fiery evil laying in the hot sun. Number two deliberately crawled over to it, and jerkily pushed its way on top of it, then both snakes lay still except for the rattling. The big one, by crawling sideways, had allowed me room to pass. From there,
every step I took was carefully chosen, only aftei scanning the brush and rocks for snakes. I probably didn’t walk more than 5 or 6 step* per minute.
