On July 21. the Marline Uranium Corporation announced discovery of a high grade uranium deposit six miles northeast of Chatham in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and discussed tentative plans to invest $200 million in mining and milling operations.
The select group of Pittsylvania officials and landowners invited to the Marline press conference welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm, but elsewhere in Pittsylvania and Virginia the news was greeted with growing concern.
Earlier in July at a meeting in Charlottesville, the Coal and Energy Commission’s uranium subcommittee had instructed its staff to prepare draft legislation under which uranium could be mined. The 7-1 vote to initiate a draft also indicated that the committee may recommend
