Dark. You can call this “Happy to Be Here.” It rained intermittently all afternoon. I'm back at the campsite now. writing by the light of a little fire which is an effective mosquito repellent. The woods are dark, but the glade next to me is still a bright spot. I can peer across it through the bunched fronds of jungle-like cinnamon ferns.
In the distance, a deer is snorting. Earlier today. I found a deer antler that had been shed, way up on the roughest of the talus slopes. I'm surprised that a deer, on its tiny hooves, would cross that rocky country.
Wood thrushes are singing and barred owls are calling from far away. A peaceful night, with the arhythmic dripping of water from the wet trees. This little fire is good company on a starless night.

Deputy Mark Wit tl resigned from the Rappahannock Sheriff’s Department, effective August 25.
Wittl, a deputy sheriff here for the past two years, will be married August 28 in Richmond. His bride is Capt. Mary B. Olmstead who is assigned to the U.S. Air Force base at Sumpter, South Carolina, where the couple will make their home. Wittl has tentative plans to enter law school at the University ot South Carolina.
