“Hey turkey, get on the move!”

That was the chant echoing through the halls of Rappahannock High School last week as the varsity cheerleaders practised routines they learned at summer cheerleading camp.

It was the first time ever that a squad from RCHS attended camp. The week at the University of Virginia's campus for the International Cheerleader Foundation’s session was the prize won through a round of fund raisers organized by the girls and their sponsor, Sally Brand. To earn the money to go, they washed cars until their fingertips wrinkled and cooked enough spaghetti to feed an army. "We'd like to thank everybody again who helped make those summer fund-raisers a success and made camp a reality,” Brand said.

The week of August 8-12 wasn't a lazy vacation in the sun, however. At all times, the ICF staff demanded a positive mental attitude coupled with unlimited energy and enthusiasm from each squad member. Brand said.

At first, it was a little overwhelming for the Rappahannock contingent to work with cheerleaders who looked like they'd already achieved semi-pro status from previous camp sessions. But they shook off their initial inferiority complex. “Our RCHS cheerleaders readily adjusted to a very difficult and unfamiliar schedule," their sponsor reported. “They started at 6:30 in the morning and worked until 10:30 at night!"
