Stairway To Heaven
Melanie Lepato Brennan, a ward corpsman at Bethesda during the colonel’s last stay, said that tower 15 where Holmes was hospitalized was known as the "stairway to heaven" because “not many people left there alive.”
Assigned to his ward from October 10-30, Brennan said that Holmes was often in a depressed state. On one occasion, she said, she found the patient talking about his father “like he was there or something." He didn’t notice me (when she entered his room)’’ but continued to mumble and stare into space.
Brennan recalled making the notation in the nursing notes that Col. Holmes was "delirious once or twice.” Checking through the records, she couldn’t find her notations and pointed out that a week's worth of nursing notes were missing.
On the second Saturday session of the trial, Doug Print/, who runs a plumbing and heating business and has hunted at the colonel’s Flint Hill farm regularly since working at his Barnaby Street house 20 years ago, recalled Dr. Neilsen telling him when he visited Holmes at Bethesda around October 28 that ‘‘the colonel was hallucinating and anything I’d do would not hold up.”
