“OH, IT’S ONLY

A SPRAINED ANKLE”

This is heard time and again by many people following an injury that is one of the most neglected of all sports (and otherwise) injuries to the foot The injury occurs usually when the toes are pointed downwards as in jumping (basketball) or when stepping off a curb There is a sudden and severe pain and often the person falls to the ground clutching his or her leg Most ankle injuries occur when the foot is forcibly turned inwards This type of injury most commonly leads to the simple sprain. A sprain is a tearing or a stretching of the ligaments holding the bones together It is important that this injury be checked because very frequently an undertreated ankle sprain or ligamentous tear will lead to a chronically unstable ankle This patient can be constantly twisting his or her ankle until the joint becomes very uncomfortable Remember if there is more than slight swelling or if there is significant pain 12 hours after the injury have the ankle examined
