Dairy goats are very important in the Middle East because the people practically live off of them. They drink the milk, they eat the meat, and they even find use for the hair and leather hides. The goats in the Middle East also are used to pull little carts to deliver the milk.
The goat is a very important animal in Syria. Because the area is so dry and barren it is difficult and costly to raise cows.
People depend on the goat herds for fresh milk and cheese.
When I lived in Damascus, Syria, it was common to hear the tinkle of bells and the call ot the goat herder early each morning as he made his way thru the city streets delivering milk. He would stop at any apartment building where someone wanted fresh milk.
The goat herder would wipe the udder, milk the goat and then tie a bandana around the udder. This cloth protected the goats udder and kept it clean.
It was funny to see goats walking thru the busy streets with colored cloths tied around them.
