As a result of Reagan administration cuts, he charged, “the Environmental Protection Agency is so underfunded that it can't develop and issue standards and guidelines to regular uranium mining. And at the same time that Virginia is getting ready to start the process to consider allowing uranium mining in the state. Congress is considering a bill to restrict uranium imports, Toscano noted. “We have a surplus of uranium now but if the restrictions are adopted, that surplus will be whittled down and that will put pressure on Virginia to agree to mining.”
Toscano also noted that Congressman Robertson supports legislation that would take away the rights of a locality to determine whether or not transport and disposal of hazardous wastes should be prohibited within its boundaries. In addition, the 7th District Congressman also endorsed legislation to allow the federal government to override state controls on fungicides and pesticides, a position Robinson took in response to lobbying from the big chemical companies, according to the Citizens Party candidate.
Robinson stresses his record of service to his constitutents “but his policies hurt those same constituents," Toscano said.
