“He’s dead! That one just died on you!”

Smoke billowed from smudge pots burning next to the overturned school bus as rescue volunteers worked smoothly and efficiently to remove injured youngsters sprawled on the floor inside. Young people with splints and slings, bandaged and braced lay on tarps spread across the meadow. Ambulances sat, their sirens temporarily stilled, waiting to transport victims to nearby hospitals. A helicopter hovered overhead, looking for a hilltop landing spot so severely injured patients could be loaded and taken to Washington, D. C.’s MedStar.
