In Virginia’s first costshare program, farmers who have already signed up for federal payment-in-kind PIK programs are eligible for a three-year commitment that could mean more than $200 per acre.
Any farmer in the PIK program can agree to plant and maintain grass filter strips along a stream or river that drains into the Chesapeake Hay and Chowan River systems. In Rappahannock, water from any stream eventually reaches the bay. The bay and the Chowan river systems are considered by the state to be environmentallv sensitive.
