always drank at home—alone. I'm a woman. I knew I couldn't drink in front of people the way 1 wanted to drink.

“And all the time, I was terribly worried about my drinking. Almost every day. I’d promise myself that I wasn’t going to drink again. Hut then this strange feeling of false security would come over me. Everything's safe. Everything’s okay. There's no danger. I can have a drink—just one drink. I'd have five minutes of good feelings after that first swal low and then the crazies would start: the turmoil, the anger, the shame, knowing that people knew about me. And I’d add to the glass. It was still my first drink. Then I'd tell myself, ‘Well, you've shot it for today. You can stop tomorrow.'
