Alcoholism is a disease that can take years to progress in an adult. In a teenager, that process is compressed, according to Treanor. Some teenagers can become full-blown alcoholics in a matter of months.
“And a lot of times, the problem is complicated by drugs,” he added.
It’s a complication that can result in more than cross addiction. Parents terrified that their children will become drug users, parents who themselves drink, frequently see nothing wrong with a son or daughter drinking. “The classic response is ‘At least he’s not on drugs.’ Well, alcoholism can be much worse and he is on a drug,” Treanor said.
