about Al-Anon. I went to local meetings quite a few times. At first I didn’t think I had anything in common with the men and women in the group. Then I realized that, without the fringes, we all had the same stories to tell.
“We made it easy for family members to be alcoholics. We nagged, we poured bottles down the sink, we covered up, we lived with guilt. Al-Anon teaches detachment with love. That is, you are not required to suffer along with an alcoholic family member. Covering bounced checks, calling the boss, talking to the bill collectors—all these protect the alcoholic from his illness. Nagging doesn’t help—you couldn’t cure a cancer patient by nagging. You have to allow the alcoholic to take responsibility for his problem and go about vour own life.
