Owings added that the youngsters welcomed the break in their routine. “They didn’t have the opportunity to meet many new people and that was the time before most of the folks here had televisions.”
Almost all of the youngsters in 4-H in those days came from small family farms, according to Owings. “Most of those farms have disappeared. And the type of operation has changed. Farming 25 years ago was much more diversified. A farmer would have a block of laying hens, a pen of hogs, beef cattle, a few sheep. There were a lot more orchards then, too,” the former county agent said.
