County government faces fiscal problems. To avoid a whopping percentage of a tax increase, always unpopular but doubly so in an election year, the supervisors slashed school spending below the current year’s level. Their action forced the deletion of desperately needed programs and personnel at a time when education throughout the country is in a state of crisis.
There has to be an alternative to that kind of fiscal surgery on budgets developed by responsible and financially conservative people. But what is that alternative? We think it lies in Washington’s old fashioned Fourth, Fodderstack Day, Sperryville’s new Indoor Flea Market, a summer craft fair, an apple day in the fall and the like.
What is needed here is the transitory tourist dollar, the money spent by those who come to enjoy the beauty of Rappahannock and its small-town festivals, purchase local produce, crafts, antiques, picnic supplies and gifts, dine at local restaurants, stay at lodging here for a weekend and then return to their homes in
