“This is not like reading a book, and then finishing it and you know what’s in it. I compare it to hunger. You may have a good meal and be satisfied, but the next day you need to eat again for survival. Survival, compassion, hope, friendship— that’s what its all about.”
Bob Treanor, substance abuse counselor at the Rappahannock Mental Health Clinic, said that denial, anxiety and the need to conceal the problem are common to what is called the “co-alcoholic”. The person can be a spouse, another family member, an employer or employee or a good friend.
“They protect the alcoholic from the consequences of his drinking,” said Treanor. “They call the boss and say he has the flu when actually he’s drunk or has a hangover.”
