He sees the same kind of changes continuing into the near future. “I think agriculture will be around for quite some time in Rappahannock but I think the number of farms will continue to decline. And we’ll see more farmers turn to direct marketing,” Owings predicted. “Once the economy picks up, we’ll continue to see farms broken up into 25 acre lots. Once that happens, the land doesn’t ever really return to agricultural production. And when development picks up again, it will accelerate. I don’t see anything that can stop it.”
