Just what the GOP dissidents have in mind is not clear.
They obviously want Cramer out. One faction is said to be supporting ultra-conservative John Alderson of Botetourt for the chairman’s job. Alderson was the manager of President Reagan’s campaign in Virginia in 1980. Another group is reportedly supporting Bliley as a compromise candidate if Cramer should step down or be fired.
Still others say they see the hand of Judy Peachee deeply involved in the whole fracas. In their view', if Cramer is ousted, Peachee will emerge as the dominant power within the party no matter who occupies the chairmanship. Of course, if that happened, the “Trible people” would be running the whole show.
Cramer regards all these frenetic doings w'ith a sort of detached bemusement. He has, of course, no intention of either stepping down or being kicked out. If it comes to a real test of power, he is not without his own constituency within the party.
Nor, for that matter is Sen. John Warner, who has to be watching this unfolding palace coup with something more than passing interest.
