“The major symptoms of alcoholism is denial and those around a woman alcoholic deny more,” said substance abuse counselor Bob Treanor, in explaining the special problems that a woman alcoholic faces.
“There’s a double standard. Men can get drunk and we refer to it as ‘sewing wild oats.' Men drunks can be funny. But a woman who drinks too much is a disgrace and a mother w ho drinks too much is a terrible disgrace.”
According to Treanor, families try to protect a woman alcoholic. They use euphemisms: mom’s sick, she's under the weather, she has a case of nerves.
This attitude js particularly preyelant in rural areas where a lot of women didn’t drink until recently, according to the substance abuse counselor. “It makes it much more difficult to get women into treatment."
