And residential development, long thought to be the alternative to industrial development, has shown itself to be fool’s gold, as far as revenue generation is concerned. Experience elsewhere has demonstrated beyond argument that subdivisions never, ever pay for themselves. The tax revenue the new homes produce is always more than off-set by the cost of services they demand.

The answer for Rappahannock, at least for the present, lies in tourism. That’s why Washington’s Fourth and other events like it deserve the support of everyone in the county. More is at stake here than just a celebration. Rappahannock merchants need to plan more tourist-attracting events and promotions. They need the boost and the county’s government could use a little help in alleviating the demand on Rappahannock’s taxpayers.
