—PKU Screening and Treatment: The General Assembly appropriates $200,000 per year for a genetics program. One part of this program is the statewide screening of newborns to detect phenylketonuria (commonly called PKU). Early detection and treatment of PKU, an inherited disease, can prevent mental retardation. All infants are automatically screened at birth. Free treatment is available for those families who are unable to pay. For families who are not medically indigent, treatment costs no more than two percent of their gross income.
—Crippled Children’s Services: Evaluation is provided for a broad range of handicapping conditions for children, to age 21, with congenital or acquired conditions that can be corrected or improved by surgical or medical treatment.
