With such a limited force, shouldn’t the police cars be spread out?” he asked, noting that just a few hundred yards away, at the same time the cruisers were parked, two motorcycles had passed two automobiles and a truck carrying a mobile home for about a half mile over double solid lines.
Woodward acknowledged that he was the driver of one cruiser. “I was just coming off duty and I was passing a teletype on a particular subject we had to pick up,” the deputy explained. “We’re not fortunate enough to be able to have two sheriffs patrol cars on duty at the same time,” Woodward added, grinning. “If we did, I’d agree they should be in separate parts of the county.”
Wittl was asked where he now resides.
“I’m glad someone asked me that,” he replied, explaining that he was a resident of the county and a deputy with the sheriffs department until his resignation in October 1982. “I married my high school sweetheart, an Air Force captain, and I live with her in South Carolina where I have been continuing my education.
