the first time, new teachers in the county’s public schools were special guests at a tea. “We wanted to acquaint them with the resource help we can provide,” explained Helmer. “In past years, the elementary school teachers, in particularly, haven’t used our county library ’ very much and we’d like that to change.”
This year’s summer reading program was again successful, according to Helmer. “We had 64 children enrolled for reading games, story hour and movies. That’s an increase of 19 children over the previous year. ”
The 1983 summer reading program was capped by another first, a puppet show by Pizzaz Puppets of Roanoke sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This year, the Friends also donated lamps to the library and, as usual, contributed a large portion of the library’s operating budget. “We couldn’t keep our doors open without their support,” Helmer said, noting that the Friends will be sending out letters this month to residents of Rappahannock seeking contributions to the annual fund drive.
