The Virginia Farm Bureau points out additional financial pitfalls awaiting apple growers. Last year, when grocery stores received $20-$25 per bushel, the orehardists were only getting $3-$7. The range depended on quality, current inventories, competing fruits and supply. The supply last year was greater than in 1981 when a late frost destroyed much of the crop, and of far better quality than this year when the drought prevented much of it from maturing.
