Alice Wood at Sunnyside Orchard in Washington says she expects less money this year under the new price system because the apples are so small. Wood says all her varieties — including delicious — are much smaller except the ram bo which she says is her best variety this year. The crop “is fairly clean” Wood added, referring to the fruit’s absence of disease this season.
Wood sends most of her apples to the cannery, some she packs for the co-op, some she sells to truckers.
Uncle Charlie
When Wood was asked "who picks ’em?” she talked about “Uncle Charlie”, the Florida crew leader who has been supplying her and several other Rappahannock orchardists with pickers and leaders for a couple of decades.
Wood has one of a number of “crew houses” in the county — she says Lewis Moore and Tom Lee also have them—where migrant workers live while harvesting in the area. (H.B.
