Bill Monroe, nationally known moderator for television’s “Meet the Press." will again chair the “Meet the Candidates" forum sponsored by the Rappahannock County Women’s Club on Wednesday, October 19, at the county elementary school.

Retail Sales
Up 17%
Retail sales figures released by the Rappahannock - Rapidan Planning District Commission for the second quarter of the year (April. May and June) show a 17.0 percent increase in Rappahannock County compared to the same period in 1982.
Measured by “taxable sales of goods and services”, Rappahannock County’s total retail sales increased from $1,734,123 in the second quarter of 1982 to $2,029,226 in 1983.
The retail groups showing the largest increases were hotels, motels and tourist camps, up $36,115 or 995.7 percent, general merchandise, up $13,686 or 35.8 percent, and furniture and home furnishings, up $43,914 or 31.8 percent. Also showing an increase was food which was up $112,299 or 13.7 percent. The only retail groups to show losses were machinery and equipment, down 66.1 percent, and automotive, down .2 percent.
Among the counties in Planning District Nine, Rappahannock showed the largest increase with 17.0 percent. Madison County was next with a 15.9 percent increase. Culpeper increased 13.9 percent, Fauquier 10.6 percent, and Orange 3.7 percent during the second quarter.
Total retail sales in Planning District 9 were up by $7.3 million dollars in the second quarter compared to the same time last year.
