The boys react to seductive dress in a manner girls don’t understand, Wilkins says; and the girls are afraid their boy friends will stop dating them if they don’t give in to their sexual demands. Discussions would also include financial hardships facing unwed mothers.
In the seventh grade children are more modest, Wilkins added. They need to be segregated by sex to see the film and receive sex education.
The motion to approve the film for grades 8-12 came at about 10:45 p.m. following a 114 hour executive session to discuss personnel and “the protection of the privacy of individuals in personal matters not related to public business.” The board also discussed appointment of substitute teachers and whether students should be allowed to stay out of school for religious beliefs.
This was the second executive session of the evening’s three hour meeting, leaving only 50 percent of the board’s business conducted in public.
The board had closed the meeting earlier in the evening to hear from seven teachers who wanted to speak “on consideration of an appointment”, according to Estabrook. That session lasted approximately 20 minutes.
