By GEORGE BOWLES
“Unity” is the word around the Virginia Republican Party headquarters these days. It is s'poken with the sort of tight-lipped determination which gives one the impression that it will be imposed by the rack and thumb-screw if necessary.
The theme of togetherness is one which the GOP rank and file no doubt feel is long overdue from their leaders. It was decreed following a meeting of the Republican State Central Committee in Richmond on Dec. 10 at which a new state party chairman was elected to replace the resigned Dr. Alfred Cramer of Culpeper.
Cramer had stepped down the week before following almost a year of lacerating attacks by party dissidents. These dissidents were, in part, displeased with Cramer’s leadership. But more importantly, the Cramer loyalists believe the insurgents were primarily interested in seizing control of the party apparatus.
