Another potential chairman-in-waiting was John Alderson of Botetourt, who is generally regarded as President Reagan’s man in Virginia. He ran the Reagan campaign in the state in 1980, and will likely do so again next year if the president seeks re-election.

Alderson is known to be interested in running for the chairmanship when the party holds its regular election of officers at its state convention in Hampton in June. That is when Cramer’s term would normally have expired.
