An old Scandinavian custom that might be fun to revive in Rappahannock is to trim an evergreen tree outdoors with edibles for the' birds and wild beasts that might visit during the holiday season.
In ancient times the family attracting the greatest number of birds was expected to have the best harvest during the next year, but it was bad luck for the birds to arrive before the decorating was completed.
Modern bird feeder trees are lovely to look at particularly with the lovely flick of feathers provided by the living decorations which will later descend.
