Janice remembers her own childhood with a Christmas morning similarly dominated by delighted youngsters. “We kids would get so excited that one year our father set a limit—1 a.m.—on how early we could get up that morning. Otherwise, he and mother wouldn’t even have time to finish wrapping. Just in case—heaven forbid—we fell asleep, we set our alarm clocks for that time. Fall asleep we did and our father snuck into our bedrooms and turned the alarm clocks off. But it was funny. When we slept past the deadline, he couldn’t stand it and he came in and woke us up himself at 2 a.m.!”
Traditions are seldom established deliberately; they usually just happen. “You wind up having traditions you didn’t even know you had,” noted Janice Moffett. “The kids ask, ‘Aren’t you going to do such-and-such this year? We always do it!’ And there, you have a family tradition.”
