The road, alternately in the sun and in shade, is in winter alternately bare or icy. It works its way around the side of the mountain and eventually, after crossing two or three rocky stretches, descends to the narrow meadow which marks the beginning of Hawlin Hollow. It is here that 618 takes on its real character and vitality.
