By DAPHNE HUTCHINSON Rappahannock New* Staff Writer On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree. On Christmas Day, celebrate the birth of the Christ Child by attending the church of your choice. Say a prayer for peace on earth, goodwill and brotherhood among men and women of different nationalities, races, colors and creeds. Mark a traditional Virginia Christmas with selections from the menu served by the Washingtons at Mount Vernon. There is plenty to choose from as Martha Washington served a feast fit for a first president: An Onion Soup Call’d the King’s Soup Oysters on the Half Shell, Broiled Salt Roe Herring Broiled Rockfish, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding Mutton Chops, Roast Suckling Pig Rpast Turkey with Chestnut Stuffing Round of Cold Boiled Beef with Horseradish Sauce Cold Baked Virginia Ham Lima Beans, Baked Acorn Squash Baked Celery with Slivered Almonds Hominy Pudding, Candied Sweet Potatoes Cantaloupe Pickle, Spiced Peaches in Brandy, Spiced Cranberries Mincemeat Pie, Apple Pie, Cherry Pie, Chess Tarts Blanc Mange, Plums in Wine Jelly, Snowballs Indian Pudding Great Cake, Ice Cream, Plum Pudding Fruits, Nuts, Raisins Port, Madeira On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me two turle doves... On Monday, drive to an overlook on Luray Mountain or motor down the Skyline Drive to admire the mountains dusted with snow and the villages nestled in the valleys below. You won’t see a turtle dove but you may spot a hawk perched in a tree top. Or pack away the ribbons, bows and wrapping paper you want to save for next year and gird yourself for the battle with the crowds jamming department stores for the annual gift exchange. If you have anything left in your bank account, you might get a jump on 1984 by taking advantage of Post-Christmas bargains.
