Dickey presented a petition with do signatures of "neighbors and friends” supporting The Inn’s “attempts towards beautification” through installation of the planters and trees, which they asserted w ere preferable to asphalt parking spaces. They requested that the conditions be modified to allow the trees to stay if The Inn received a variance.
Dickey said a contractor had told The Inn’s owners that the total cost of the items and their removal would be approximately $•‘42,500.
Dickey reminded the council members that the only reason they had given him for the conditions was the parking. Careful reading of the zoning ordinance showed that The Inn needed 10 spaces, according to Dickey. It now had :fl. Dickey then asked the council to modify the conditions on granting the variance to say that if parking became a later problem, The Inn would be required to provide more spaces. For exam pie, he said, if The Inn should ever lose its lease to share the Trinity Kpiscopal Church parking lot, he said it would be fair to request more parking spaces within bOO feet of the building. “I really very much don’t want to be involved in litigation— I think this is a reasonable
way to handle it,” he concluded.
