Church Trees
Ann Keyser, who grew up on a farm outside the town of Washington, remembers when each church had a Christmas tree. “The children went from one to another, collecting a gift at each,” she recalled, laughing. “Finally, the Baptist Church tree became the community tree. It was lit by candles. The children were given the job of policing the tree. I remember we had to sit beneath the tree so we could give the alarm if a candle fell over.”
All the youngsters received a bag of candy. Sunday school teachers also had special separate gifts for boys and girls. “The teachers usually gave the boys a pocket knife and the little girls got a doll made of black stockings. Mine was Dinah. She had a red bandana, buttons on her shoes, a red flannel petticoat, a checkered black and white dress and a white apron,” Mrs. Keyser recalled. “And she had split drawers.
